APPLICATIONS BULLETINS
Data Cable Shielding

All communications cable connecting Smart Switches, Readers, PC’s, and Printers must be SHIELDED CABLE for EIA RS-232C applications. All Cable shields must be PROPERLY GROUNDED (see below).

Belden Shielded Cable Types are provided as a cross-reference:

5-conductor: Belden 9535 (Foil Shield) or 9929 (Foil + Braid) or 83506 (Teflon)

8-conductor: Belden 9538 (Foil Shield) or 9933 (Foil + Braid) or 83509 (Teflon)

All types have a tinned copper drain wire for easy shield termination. Foil + Braid is recommended for electrically noisy, industrial environments. Teflon-Insulated may be required for use in Air Plenums.

Cautions and Recommendations for Communications Cabling

Make no splices in communications cable which cause a break in the shield. Run cable in conduit to protect against damage. Run communications and AC power cable in separate conduit. Do not pull unprotected cable through metal studs; sharp edges may damage the shield or the conductors. Use EMI/RFI hoods on all RS-232 connectors. Before connecting cables, do a resistance check with an ohmmeter to make sure that none of the conductors have been unintentionally grounded.
